Independent contractors are not covered by WorkCover and Comcare workers compensation schemes.  It is important that independent contractors arrange their own insurance and are aware of their responsibilities to anyone they employ.

The definition of an independent contractor vs an employee  is not always straightforward. 

You should get legal advice regarding independent contractor law if you a contractor.  You may in fact be an employee depending on the circumstances.
