When you make a will you decide what you want to do with all of your property (your ‘estate’). You can be quite specific about who benefits from your estate and when they benefit.
If you do not have a will you will die intestate and your property will be distributed according to the laws of intestacy. These laws prescribe a hierarchy of people (“beneficiaries”) related to you who will receive your property.
The Public Trustee may become involved and will be paid from your estate.
